Tips for Traveling with children
Tips fopr traveling with kids: We have done lots of travel with our three and perhaps the worst behaved person on all of the trips has always been me. I am the one who looses focus and runs out of a sense of humor. I would now put sticky notes up all over the car or plane seat saying : How is this funny? Because it will be someday so I might as well start laughing now! Really really important to make the journey the holiday – not just the destination! Focus on savoring and enjoying each moment rather than on efficiency. Relax and enjoy – you are on holiday after all. Other than that – I bought four hundred small things in small packets and packed their carry-ons full of them. They got to explore through that lot and then I keep another stash for the trip home. As the kids get older they can choose the stuff with me and put it into baggies and into the bags and relish all the anticipation. For Disney, I bought a small book on origami and some very small origami papers and made butterflies and frogs for everyone while we waited in lines. Unusually entertaining: a box of tissues can be snatched out and layered and mouhntaine4d and redone for ages. A box of bandaids makes for fabulous playing for absolutely hours. Also consider straws and ice. Painting on paper with the melting ice and on their hands and blowing through the straws at each other and threading straws together. There are now really washable markers – called face markers – that you can genuinely wash off skin easily. I travel with several sets of those. Skin colored makeup and stuff that sparkles! They can paint themselves and each other and even you!(Warning – NOT nail polish!) For travel with the older kids – we are loving listening to audio books – just finished listening to “A Short History of Nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson – wonderful! Doing word games where they have to come up with 3 words that start with the letter you choose and in a specific category eg: animals that begin with p 20 questions – I can only answer yes and no and you have to figure out what animal I am thinking of. Playing this sometimes makes me believe in esp! Bring your diary from when you were a child and read them bits and reminisce – better still get your parents to write them letters that tell tales on you! Nothing delights my kids more than laughing at me. Put the teen in the car in charge of the maps and all stops of interest and timing. They also need to watch the fuel and make sure that you gas up in time. Note – stopping at the side of the road to consider the shape of the leaves is a valid stop! Make time to include the chocolate factory and the outlet store. When the kids are little drive from one playground restaurant to another. Get them lots to drink and let them bounce all over the place – then go find food somewhere else – preferably picnic in the car – it passes time so well. Dress up is a magnificent game and needs only silky scarves and boas, beads and bangles for little girls to think they are in heaven. Especially if you sparkly stuff to paint on too. Drinks need to be in spill-proof bottles – either the kiddie ones, or if they are old enough to scorn those, then use Gatorade bottles.
